Alicia Keys Hosts Nickelodeon’s Nick News Special On Race & The Black Lives Matter Movement
Unless you’ve been living underneath a rock recently, you probably know about all of the events going on related to racial inequality and injustice. One of the most apparent incidents that have taken place recently is the killing of George Floyd, which was caught on video camera for the entire world to see. In Minnesota, George Floyd was killed by a police officer of the name Derrick Chauveugn who killed Mr. Floyd by way of placing a knee on his neck for a prolonged period of time.
This situation sparked a massive outcry in the media, causing large swarms of Black Lives Matter protests to begin happening in various cities all over the region. All of these events have culminated in multiple conversations about race and the ethical practices of police officers everywhere to be brought into question.
Nickelodeon is deciding to get in on the action by hosting a conversation about race in America on Monday titled: “Monday: Kids, Race, and Unity: A Nick News Special.” which will be hosted by Alicia Keys.
What to expect
When talking about how the special came about, Alicia Keys said the following: “I’ve had a vision of a forum that can engage kids during this time and help to focus our attention on how they might be feeling, and this Nick News special is it!”
Talking about race in America can be a very uncomfortable and sensitive topic for many people. This tends to lead to the use of shying away from having these conversations with our children as we don’t want t to expose them to these touchy subjects. However, that is counterproductive because often, they are already experiencing issues of racism in their everyday life.
How conversations help
Alicia also stated, “What’s happening in the world is not just a problem for the Black community, it’s all of our problems, and we ALL have to care about it to change it! This is such an important, vulnerable, honest, and beautiful conversation, and I know many families may be searching for the right way to enter it. Let’s really deep dive together”
The special will consist of Blacks Lives Matter co-founders Opal Tometi, Alicia Garza, and Patrisse Cullors. The conversation will allow kids and families to get an in-depth look into all of the problems currently facing our society as we all grapple with real-world issues on race and injustice that impact so many people daily.
The special will be titled “Kids, Race, and Unity: A Nick News Special” and it will air on Nicktoons, Nickelodeon, and TeenNick at 7 p.m. ET/PT. You can also view the special on Nickelodeon YouTube, the Nick App, Nick Pluto TV, and Nick On Demand after the initial premiere.
If you’re trying to find an avenue through which you can comfortably discuss race with your children, this is the perfect opportunity for you to do so.
